A temporary bridge over the A303 will be installed in a single weekend next month. The bridge will be put in place at Steart Hill near Hazlegrove for construction traffic to use while ongoing improvements to the Sparkford to Ilchester section continue.

It will be in place for 35 weeks in a bid to ease congestion on the A303 and reduce the impact of the upgrades on local motorists, National Highways has revealed. A 200 tonne crane will be used to lift the new bridge into place next month between Friday May 13 and Monday May 16.

The crane will move three bridge girders into place and then install the decking to the structure. The A303 will be closed in both directions for the duration of the weekend works.

A statement from the National Motorways read: “With the bridge in place, construction traffic carrying earth from one side of the site to the other will not impact motorists using the A303. The A303 will be closed between Hazlegrove and Podimore roundabouts for the weekend.

“The closure will be in place from Friday 13 May 10pm to Monday 16 May 5am to allow for this key part of the project. During the weekend closures, clearly marked diversions will be in place via the A359 and the A37.”

National Highways is working with construction company Galliford Try to deliver the project, and Hannah Sanderson, Program Manager at National Highways, said: “The installation of the temporary bridge marks an important milestone for this major project, which is extremely important for Somerset’s future and vital to the A303/A358 corridor It’s exciting how the work is progressing.

“This temporary taxiway means we can minimize disruption throughout construction. We will ensure motorists are fully informed of detours and suggested routes via signage and media. We advise drivers to plan ahead. advance and allow more time for their journeys over the weekend.”

With construction now well advanced, the A303 upgrade is expected to open to traffic in spring 2024 and you can find out more about the project and construction process on the National Highways Virtual Exhibition. here.
