Ahmedabad: Afflicted by fear of unemployment, workers at the passenger vehicle manufacturing plant of Ford India Limited, the wholly owned subsidiary of Ford Motor Company (FMC), in Sanand, demanded that the entity buying the factory employs them.
Production at the plant was halted last week after it hit the manufacturing target of 5 lakh of spare parts, months after the company announced its intention to exit its India operations, according to well-placed sources. .
Vijay Bapodara, chairman of Karnavati Kamdar Ekta Sangh (KKES), who worked at the Sanand plant, said: “Negotiations are already underway with the company. In addition to the severance package offered by Ford, we required that the entity taking over plant operations employ all workers associated with Ford.
Some 630 workers were employed at Ford’s Sanand plant, 500 of whom worked at the passenger vehicle manufacturing plant while the rest worked at the engine plant. Production is still ongoing at the engine plant.
Workers employed at the factory earn about Rs 25,000 per month according to the sources.
“Compensation offers have been made based on the number of years a given employee has worked at the plant. A discussion on this subject is ongoing between the management of the company and our representatives. At present, the automotive industry is facing a massive shortage of semiconductors due to which production in all companies has taken a hit. Therefore, new hires are also affected. So if we are laid off by Ford, finding another job will be a challenge,” Bapodara said.
Although production is closed, the American automaker has decided to retain workers and employees until May this year. Sources confirmed that workers along with other employees were sent on paid leave as production at the manufacturing plant was shut down.
An email query sent to Ford India elicited no response.
TOI recently reported that the decks have been cleared for Tata Motors’ takeover of Ford India’s passenger car manufacturing plant in Sanand. Both companies have submitted an approved transfer of ownership proposal. In all likelihood, a high-level committee (HPC) appointed by the state government will give a nod to the proposal, paving the way for Tata Motors to take control of the plant.
