The 28 XXL monopiles of Arcadis Ost 1 are the largest monopile foundations ever installed, weighing more than 2,000 tons each, and having a diameter of 9.5 meters and a length of up to 110 meters. The project is located northeast of the famous cliffs of Kap Arkona, in the 12 NM zone of Germany with water depths of up to 45 meters and difficult ground conditions. It will receive its 27 Vestas V 174 – 9.5 MW wind turbines later this year and will produce green electricity to power up to 290,000 homes.

‘Orion’ was running on LNG during the installation campaign and is fitted with a 5,000 tonne crane and a bespoke motion compensated pile gripping system capable of handling huge XXL monopile foundations. The integrated motion-compensated pile gripper tool allows the crew to overturn and drive the monopiles, which are transported horizontally across the deck. Combined with the vessel’s DP3 capability, the motion compensated clamp keeps the monopiles vertical and stable despite waves and vessel movement.

In addition, a full set of new specialized tools were used during this inaugural project for “Orion”. These innovative tools include an adjustable monopile overboard system, a newly built automated monopile lifting beam to allow horizontal lifting of XXL monopiles, automated quick lifting tools to avoid manual handling on deck, as well as several new noise reduction systems.

“We are extremely pleased to see ‘Orion’ and its motion-compensated pile gripper doing what the vessel was created to do, installing huge monopiles in extreme circumstances,” said Hugo Bouvy, Managing Director of DEME Offshore. . “This pushes the boundaries of the offshore wind industry on the horizon and shows that DEME’s smart solutions and equipment are ready for the next generation of foundations and wind turbines. Many years of offshore experience and engineering by incredibly motivated people have resulted in the delivery of “Orion” and its installation tools. Our persistent project and new construction teams from Arcadis Ost 1, together with our experienced and extremely professional team, led to the commissioning of ‘Orion’ in record time. Together, they pushed technological boundaries with enormous enthusiasm and dynamism. I am so proud to be part of this team!
